Argentina’s victory over South Africa stats

Argentina managed to narrowly stop South Africa on Saturday 21 September at home, preventing the Springboks from winning the Rugby Championship title thanks to a last-gasp penalty miss (29-28), on the fifth day of the tournament that they can still win.

Quickly led 17-0 by the South Africans, unbeaten before this meeting, the Pumas team managed a spectacular comeback, scoring four tries in 20 minutes to take the lead at half-time (26-22).

The second half was less prolific in terms of points, but intense in suspense. Having fallen behind after two South African penalties (26-28), the Argentinians regained the advantage thanks to Tomas Albornoz (29-28), before Manie Libbok missed the decisive kick for the world champions at the end of the match.

The Pumas, currently second (14 points), can still snatch the title from their opponents of the day (19 points) on the last day.

To do so, they will have to win again in South Africa on September 28, while obtaining an offensive bonus and preventing the Springboks from winning a defensive bonus.
