Leclerc’s tackle to Total on the price of fuel

While fuel prices have been falling for weeks, returning to pre-war prices in Ukraine, Total is still applying its fuel price cap operation at €1.99/L or €1.94/L for some of its electricity and gas customers.

An operation that is now useless. The average price of diesel is €1.5887/L on average, while that of SP95-E10 petrol is €1.6791/L. And Michel-Edouard Leclerc tackled Total’s operation on RMC/BFMTV:

“Today, petrol is falling, diesel is falling. I have the impression that it is still quite sustainable. There is stock, the specialists tell us.”

“In any case, Total’s advertising is really getting old (…) because seeing full pages during the summer saying “if you have a subscription (…) you won’t pay more than €1.95/L for petrol, frankly we could give consumers money for that price.”

Total already in Leclerc’s sights

This attack follows other harsh remarks by Michel-Edouard Leclerc, against Patrick Pouyanné and TotalEnergies. The former thus estimated, in an Instagram post, that “Pouyanné is a super warrior but here he is talking hot air”. He also found it “quite funny” that TotalEnergies takes “motorists for zombies”.

“In reality, Total’s promise is similar to that of a Ricard, whose bar would limit its price to 4.50 euros, when it is already sold at 2.50 euros elsewhere”. “Total has not shown much effort in the competition between service stations on fuel prices.”

Oil prices remain low

It remains to be seen whether the trend will reverse in the future or not. Let us recall that fuel prices are currently low thanks to the fall in the price of oil. The barrel of Brent has largely fallen below 80 dollars, despite a rebound during the second half of August.

The price of a barrel of Brent is now even approaching 70 dollars. It was below 72 dollars last week. This is immediately felt in prices at the pump.

To summarize

Michel-Edouard Leclerc, representative of the E.Leclerc centers, will certainly not go on vacation with Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies. The former has just once again tackled the energy company’s fuel price capping operation.
