What is this futuristic movie where the beautiful ones take on the ugly ones, and… is there a sequel planned?

A dystopia starring Joey King (and many other familiar faces from Netflix), set in a society where beauty standards reign supreme, with the question in the background: to conform… or to rebel?

In a futuristic world that requires cosmetic surgery from the age of 16, Tally, a “pretty” in the making, is eager to conform to the expectations of such a perfection-obsessed society. But when one of her friends runs away to a secret colony of resistance fighters (the “uglies”, literally “the ugly ones”), the young girl embarks on an adventure that will shake up all her beliefs.

Based on the first volume of a series of novels by Scott Westerfield, which has captivated many readers around the world, “Uglies” skillfully explores the theme of the quest for identity, diversity and self-acceptance. Of the social pressure of beauty standards, too. In the age of social networks, where appearance and appearance reign supreme, the story itself has never been more relevant and topical!

A science fiction film for young adults, cast in the mold of “Divergent” and led by the excellent Joey King. Recently alongside Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron in “The Family Secret”, also on Netflix, the actress revealed to the general public in “The Kissing Booth” shares the bill here with other “in-house” talents, starting with the charismatic Chase Stockes from “Outer Banks”, Jan Luis Castellanos from “13 Reasons Why”, Luke Eisner from “Tall Girl” and Laverne Cox, from “ is the New Black”.

A franchise in the making?

Note that in 2018, the author wrote a new saga, “Imposters”, which takes place ten years after the events of the first novels (“Uglies”, “Pretties”, “Specials”, “Extras” and “Secrets”). Four other books form this second literary series, the most recent of which, “Youngbloods”, was released in 2022. It is therefore not impossible, if the public is there on Netflix, that “Uglies” will be entitled to one or even several sequels!

“Uglies” (film), September 13 on Netflix.
