Maïwenn married to Luc Besson: “He was only there for my physique”, these attacks which hurt her

On May 16, Maïwenn’s new film, Jeanne du Barry, will be released in cinemas. In promotion, the actress and director, who plays Johnny Depp on screen, gave an interview to the magazine She, this Thursday, May 4. In the columns of our colleagues, she explained the reason why she appreciates the character of the countess so much, that she decided to embody, but also entrusted his “inferiority complex”.

By evoking the “common points [qu’il y a] between the movie and [elle]”, Maïwenn returned to the old love story that she lived with Luc Besson, her first husband, who bore her a daughter when she was still a teenager. “It’s no secret, being younger, I was with a powerful, older man,” she began, remembering the criticisms she had to face at this time of her life: “As I was a girl of a lower social class than hers, it was implied that I was only there out of interest, and that he was only there for my physique or my young age, and I had a very bad experience of our relationship being described as such. Maïwenn also explained, with regret, that “later [elle a] heard that[‘elle avait] succeeded in making films thanks to him”, a filmmaker established in the seventh art, who had made an international career.

A young girl who was “hurt” by the judgment of others

The director of polishes and of My king lamented these easy tackles that prevented her from feeling legitimate in her professional life: “These are really words that mark, that hurt. Whatever we do, we are brought back, reduced to clichés and shortcuts that we stick around for years.” Looking back, Maïwenn said that Jeanne du Barry East “a bit of a metaphor for this period, and this complex history” which she shared with Luc Besson. “I probably went to tap into what I was feeling at the time. It’s funny, because they say I make autobiographical films, and they think this one is going to break the rule, but I always feel like I’m telling things I know”she summed up, frankly.
