This is a message from Paul Boucher, President of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.
Sisters,
colleagues,
friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of one of our own, Brother Mohammed Khan. He died this afternoon in a work accident at the CN rail yard in Rivière-des-Prairies, Montreal.
Brother Khan was 29 years old and had only joined our ranks in December. He quickly established himself as a hard-working and appreciated railway worker. His passing is a blow to all of us, and we send our deepest condolences to his friends, family and co-workers.
Today is the National Day of Mourning, a day to remember workers who died in workplace accidents and recommit to safety and prevention. It adds a layer of agony to this tragic loss.
I invite railway workers across Canada to pay tribute to Mohammed by making safety their top priority. Look out for each other, report potentially dangerous situations and refuse to perform dangerous tasks. Your union will support you.
It is my position that workplace accidents are always preventable. Rest assured that we will follow the upcoming investigation closely. We will also be working with company and government agencies in the coming months to help determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
Rest in peace, Brother Khan. You will not be forgotten.
In solidarity,
Paul Boucher
President of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference
