Zambian authorities announced on Tuesday that they had seized a private plane carrying $5.6 million in cash, 602 gold coins and five guns with 126 bullets.
Ten people, including a Zambian, six Egyptians, a Dutchman, a Spaniard and a Latvian, were taken into custody by the Commission, pending further investigation.
The director general of the Drug Enforcement Commission, Nason Banda, told reporters in the capital, Lusaka, that the plane from Cairo, Egypt and carrying “dangerous goods” had landed on Monday around 7 p.m. (local time) at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka.
“We conducted, together with colleagues from various law enforcement agencies, an operation that resulted in the seizure of $5.6 million, five revolvers, seven magazines (of ammunition), 126 rounds, 602 gold coins weighing 127.2 kilograms and equipment to weigh gold,” Banda explained.
He added that the plane in which the items were found, as well as another plane belonging to a local airline, have been seized.
Nason Banda also said the money had been entrusted to the Bank of Zambia, pending the outcome of the investigation.
