A violent fire broke out on Friday August 4, 2023 in the evening in Saint-André in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The fire ravaged ten hectares in total. 200 firefighters were mobilized to put an end to the flames which threatened a campsite and sheds.

The alert was given around 10 p.m. on Friday August 4, 2023. The fire broke out in Saint-André in the La Pave sector. 200 firefighters were quickly mobilized on the ground to put an end to this vegetation fire on the massif, fanned by the Tramontana.

The firefighters had to fight hard to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby campsite. The sixty firefighters who had gone to lend a hand to the Catalan bombers in Portbou had to be repatriated.

At one o’clock in the morning, the SDIS 66 indicated that the fire was fixed and that the flooding operations were in progress.

In the end, ten hectares burned and 14 people had to be evacuated. The victims were relocated by the town hall of Saint-André.

We do not know the origin of this fire but Alain Lagarraigue, deputy mayor in charge of security, does not hide his suspicions.

It’s weird these fires that always light up in the evening, always on a windy day and it’s the fifth or sixth fire starting since June between Argeès and Saint-André.

Alain Lagarrigue, deputy mayor of Saint-André in charge of security.

ONF agents were on site this Saturday morning to inspect the site and try to identify the causes of the disaster.
