“After years of struggling with myself…”: Conner Rousseau comes out

The president of Vooruit made the announcement on his Instagram account late Thursday afternoon.

Recently, the young socialist had admitted, also via his social networks, to start a break in his political career. This statement surprised more than one since the day before, during a party congress, he was re-elected with more than 95% of the votes at the head of Vooruit.

In a video shared on Youtube, the Flemish socialist reveals his bisexuality.

Timing not innocent

According to the political journalist of the VRT, Ivan De Vadder, this announcement by Conner Rousseau takes on different aspects: “It can be understood as a campaign stunt,” he explains, before adding that he has noticed a passage curious in the YouTube video: “He says: ‘I feel hunted’. Then he talks about rumors which he does not dwell on. And then it should be noted that in recent weeks, there have been up to two unilateral requests from the president to take a publication offline. We are aware of two court inquiries – not complaints – alleging possible inappropriate behavior.”

As the VRT explains in an article on the subject, the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office conducted an investigation following a report finding possible inappropriate behavior on the part of the president of Vooruit towards a young man of 17 years. This complaint does not come from the young man himself, but was made by the journalist who allegedly spoke with the 17-year-old man.

The investigation was dismissed at the end of May, the prosecution believing that there had been no offense on the part of Conner Rousseau. The young socialist was heard by the police, and according to information from the VRT, the 17-year-old young man did not wish to answer the police’s questions.

At the same time, the Antwerp prosecutor’s office received a letter from a mother explaining that she was worried about Conner Rousseau’s behavior in relation to her 17-year-old son and in particular from the point of view of the messages they exchanged.

Ivan De Vadder analyzes this speaking out as a form of avoidance of certain problems: “I tell myself that there has been a coming out because certain things are broadcast around the world. It looks a bit like a headlong rush.”

The VRT specifies this Thursday evening that it will not broadcast the video of Conner Rousseau because he refuses to answer questions from his editorial staff as explained by Alain Gerlache in a Tweet.
