New incident in the Baltic Sea. An underwater cable linking Sweden and Latvia has been damaged, the authorities of the two countries announced on Sunday January 26. “This cable belongs to a Latvian entity. I was in close contact with my colleague Evika Silina throughout the day”Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on the social network

For its part, Latvia announced that it had dispatched a warship to the site of the damage, specifying that it had identified a “suspicious ship”the Michalis Sanas well as two other ships in the area. The damage took place in Swedish territorial waters at a depth of at least 50 meters, officials said.

The President of the European Commission, the German Ursula von der Leyen, expressed her “total solidarity” with the European countries affected by the damage. “The resilience and security of our critical infrastructure is a top priority”underlined the head of the European executive on X.

Countries bordering the Baltic Sea are working to strengthen their defenses after the alleged sabotage of several submarine cables in recent months. These degradations, targeting energy and communication infrastructures, are part, according to experts and political leaders, in the context of a “hybrid warfare” led by Russia against Western countries.
