The town hall of the 12th arrondissement of Paris was hit, on the night of Sunday January 26 to Monday January 27, by a spectacular fire which set its spire, 36 meters high, on fire. 150 firefighters and 60 vehicles were mobilized from 3:20 a.m. to put out the flames. No casualties have been reported.
If the fire was brought under control early in the morning, around 7 a.m., risks remain regarding the stability of the spire, recognized the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez. “There is an uncertainty which remains on the stability of the arrow with a risk of collapse”, he stressed at the microphone of RTL. “The collapse of the spire would cause even greater damage than what we are currently seeing“, recognized Laurent Nuñez.
“It will undoubtedly take several days, in particular for our security architects from the police headquarters to assess (the damage),” he continued. “There is inevitably a judicial investigation which will open. At this point, I have no reason to believe this is criminal. The investigation will confirm it or not”, also declared Laurent Nuñez. “The services of the town hall of the 12th arrondissement will be deported to the town hall of the 11th arrondissement“, specified the Paris police prefect.
