It’s been eighty years since the Soviet army entered the concentration and extermination camp from Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland. On January 27, 1945, Russian troops discovered the horror of the Shoah there. Nearly a million Jews died in this death camp between 1940 and 1945, out of the six million exterminated by Nazi Germany.

To commemorate this event, a ceremony is organized on Monday in Poland, in the presence of survivors. In , a tribute takes place at the Shoah memorial in , in the presence of Emmanuel Macron. It is broadcast by France 2 from 9 a.m.

A special program on France 2 presented by Julian Bugier at 9 a.m. Nathalie Saint-Cricq and several guests follow live the tribute to the victims of the Shoah paid in Paris by the Head of State. Testimonies from survivors, their loved ones as well as insights from historians will accompany the ceremony.

(New window An international ceremony organized at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The event will begin at 4 p.m. in a tent erected above the entrance gate of the former Nazi camp. All Auschwitz survivors have been invited to this commemoration, and at least fifty will be present. Delegations from 54 countries are expected for the anniversary of the liberation of the camp. Emmanuel Macron will go there, as will German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will also be absent.

Russia absent from the commemorations. All Russian representatives were excluded from the ceremonies in Poland, the Auschwitz museum announced in September, judging that a “such a presence would be cynical” in the context of the war in Ukraine. This is the third consecutive exclusion of Russia from these commemorations since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
