A fire broke out this Monday morning in the town hall of the 12th arrondissement of Paris.
More than 150 firefighters are involved in the disaster.
The spire of the building, dating from 1876, is in danger of collapsing.
Images reminiscent of the terrible fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in April 2019. During the night from Sunday to Monday, the town hall of the 12th arrondissement of Paris located at 130, avenue Daumesnil was hit by a spectacular fire which set its thirty-meter-high campanile ablaze.
The fire was “mastered” shortly before 7 a.m., said a spokesperson for the Paris fire brigade, which was alerted around 3:20 a.m. and deployed around sixty engines as well as 150 firefighters to combat the disaster.
The spire of the bell tower threatens to collapse
The “roof fire”, whose origin is not known, has “attack” the 36-meter bell tower capping the town hall, and this belfry was once presented “a risk of collapse”, according to the BSPP communications officer.
“We must now confirm that nothing is going to fall,” added this spokesperson, predicting that the firefighters would remain “at the bedside” of the building for a good part of the day on Monday.
“Inside, under the roof, we will have to evacuate the water” dumped by the firefighters, said this source, specifying that the BSPP had initiated its conservation module for the works of art present in the building.
-Around sixty machines and more than 150 vehicles mobilized
Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez was on site this Monday morning around 6 a.m. He insisted that there was no “no casualties” to deplore.
Around sixty vehicles and 153 firefighters were deployed to put out the flames. The guard who lives inside the 12th town hall was evacuated.
An investigation was opened by the Paris prosecutor’s office to determine the origin of this disaster.
