It’s been 80 years since the Soviet army entered the concentration and extermination camp from Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland. On January 27, 1945, Russian troops discovered the horror of the Shoah there. Nearly a million Jews died in this death camp between 1940 and 1945, out of the six million exterminated by Nazi Germany. To commemorate this event, a ceremony is organized Monday in Poland, in the presence of survivors. In France, a tribute takes place at the Shoah Memorial in Paris, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron. It is broadcast by France 2 from 9 am.
A special program on France 2 presented by Julian Bugier at 9 am. Nathalie Saint-Cricq and their guests, follow the tribute to the victims of the Shoah live which will be paid to the Memorial in Paris by the Head of State. Testimonials from survivors, their loved ones, and the lighting of historians, will accompany the ceremony.
(New window An international ceremony organized in Auschwitz-Birkenau. It will start at 4 p.m. in a tent erected above the entrance gate of the old Nazi camp. All the survivors of Auschwitz were invited to this commemoration, and at least fifty will be present. Delegations from 54 countries are expected for the anniversary of the release of the camp. Emmanuel Macron will go there, like the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu will also be absent.
Russia absent from commemorations. All Russian representatives were excluded from ceremonies in Poland, the Auschwitz museum announced in September, judging that a “Such presence would be cynical” in the context of the war in Ukraine. This is the third consecutive exclusion from Russia to these commemorations since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
