Trains more on time in summer

Concretely, punctuality is relatively seasonal, this is what seems to emerge from the figures from Infrabel, the network manager. Over the last 5 years, the months of November (86,5 %), d’october (87.7%) and June (89.2%) have the worst punctuality averages.

And these are during the months ofaugust (92,8 %), July (92,3 %) et January (91%) that the trains were the most punctual.

What are the main causes of train delays?

The causes of delays are categorized, as indicated by Infrabel:

  • Infrabel : delays generated by the infrastructure manager in terms of infrastructure reliability, works management and traffic control
  • SNCB: SNCB delays in train service operation and rolling stock reliability
  • Tiers : delays due to causes not directly linked to the activities of Infrabel and the railway operators. Examples: accidents at level crossings, collisions with people, cable theft, etc.
  • Systemic robustness : certain causes not visible in the analysis of major incidents, but which nevertheless have a significant impact on punctuality in reality. Example: a train is delayed by 10 seconds at each stop and then has a delay of 2 minutes in Brussels, which has the effect of hindering another train.
  • Others : delays generated by other railway operators and delays without identified cause.

In 2024, one in four delays was attributed to a lack of systemic robustness.

Compared to the previous three years, the number of incidents occurring in 2024 is decreasing:

Trespassing on the tracks et rolling stock damage are the two main causes of incidents causing delays:
