After the wild cuts of 1,700 Amazon warehouse employees, subcontractors, including dozens of delivery companies, learned in a cavalier and without opinion that their services were no longer retained.
Alexandre Campeau worked for a company which brought together more than 200 deliverers all intended for the delivery of objects for Amazon from the Lachine warehouse.
“We were paid by Amazon, who was our only customer, through our company,” explains Montrealers. All the guidelines came from Amazon and I even had a company uniform.
“We were like partners. Even if we were working exclusively for Amazon, we were not considered employees. ”
Like workers who worked in warehouses, Amazon’s announcement took all the subcontractors by surprise. In short, it was in turn to be treated “in savage”.
“It happened from nowhere. No one was aware. We had a meeting with our boss who announced the news to us.
“I saw several big fellows cry.”
His company, whose name cannot be disclosed for fear of reprisals, delivered thousands of parcels daily in its sector. However, this is not a unique case. Companies contacted by the Journal did not want to comment on the situation.
Steam service?
Amazon will now turn to other companies to ensure the delivery of their packages in the coming days. As for its inventory, the majority of the products would have been moved to Ontario.
The delivery person believes that Quebecers will now have to be more patient when they place orders on the site.
-“It will take one or two more days than before,” says Mr. Campeau. People will no longer have the same service.
“Sometimes people commanded and we were able to deliver the same day. It will not happen anymore. We had two departures a day and even three during the holiday season. ”
An opinion which is the opposite of a few companies which mentioned earlier this week that Quebecers will not see the difference within the period of their deliveries, despite the departure of Amazon from Quebec.
On a good day of delivery, Mr. Campeau could deliver approximately 200 packages per day from western Montreal.
Still hope
Even if he has already received a job offer on social networks, Alexandre Campeau still maintains a thin hope of being able to continue to deliver parcels for Amazon.
“I would like to save Amazon and I cling to the declaration of a federal minister who asked the company to return to its decision,” said Montrealers.
Last Thursday, TVA Nouvelles had confirmation that 1459 additional layoffs had been carried out with multinational suppliers.
In addition to the 1,700 workers in the seven warehouses, nearly 3,500 employees have lost their work according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Solidarity.
