In the interview he gave us on the eve of the Lexus Pipe Pro (January 27 – February 8) which marks the launch of the CT season, Marco Mignot (24 years old) assures us that he is in Hawaii to go the most far possible and aims to finish the season in the Top 10.
How are you feeling on the eve of the season launch?
I had a little stress, a little doubt but I worked through it, telling myself that I just wanted to enjoy this moment.
Like Vahine Fierro, you benefit from the advice of Jérémy Florès present in Hawaii…
Do you imagine that I am advised by a guy who has won the Pipe twice? It’s incredible. He gave me so much advice, on the spot but also on the CT. Jérémy knows how to perfectly express and transmit his knowledge. There is a whole team behind me. There is Jérémy but also my coach Jason Aparicio. And also all those who are in France and who help me to succeed.
What is your ambition at Pipeline?
I’m not going into a competition to lose! I’m going to go series by series and we’ll see how far I can go. In any case, I’m not here to just make a result. I come to win. At Pipeline, the waves are big and powerful. I want to show myself. People only know me in small waves. I want to surf and demonstrate that I have the level in the big sport too.
And on the tour?
This year is going to be a season of learning. I will grow enormously. I want to be “Rookie of the year” and finish in the Top 10.
You are the only Frenchman in the table, gentlemen. Can others join you?
I hope that my qualification, at my age (24), will open doors and that I will be joined by other French surfers. You have to believe in yourself. You have to give everything and know what you want.
