The censorship of Michel Barnier’s government costs “100 million euros per day” to the state coffers, Public Accounts Minister Amélie de Montchalin declared on BFMTV on Sunday.

She assures, in this regard, that on “January 1, because the budget (2025) was not applied”, the country “lost 6 billion euros in revenue which did not enter the coffers and “savings that are not being made”.

“The situation should not cause the French to become anxious” nevertheless pleaded the minister who insisted that “censorship costs a lot” and that without a budget “taxes will increase”.

According to Amélie de Montchalin “the budget voted by the Senate does not meet the condition of being the compromise budget” and only “reduces the deficit”.

“It will not be the budget of the right, the budget of the left, the budget of the center, but the budget of the country,” she pleaded.

These declarations come as a joint committee is due to meet Thursday at the National Assembly to vote on the final version of the budget text which will be presented to deputies and put to the vote.

As a reminder, since the censorship of Michel Barnier’s government after its use of article 49.3 of the Constitution to validate the 2025 social security budget, finds itself without a new budget and therefore applies that of the year 2024 by default.

Pending a new budget, parliament must validate the special law proposed by the Executive to allow the normal functioning of public coffers.
