The NFC conference finals took place this Sunday evening! On the field, the Philadelphia Eagles, champions of the NFC East division, faced the big surprise of this 2024 NFL season: the Washington Commanders led by their young and talented quarterback Jayden Daniels. At the end of this NFC conference final, it was the Philadelphia Eagles who validated their ticket to Super Bowl LIX which will be held in two weeks.
(2) Philadelphie Eagles 55 – 23 Washington Commanders (6)
This NFC conference final duel between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders promised to be close and spectacular. Spectacular it was! Tight, a little less on the other hand.
Run, Eagles, Run!
The matchup favorable to the Eagles was perfectly identified in this NFC conference final: the running game. Since the start of the season, the Eagles have relied on an impressive running game led by the inevitable Saquon Barkley. A godsend when facing the third worst defense in the NFL in this area!
Saquon Barkley will soon put his best foot forward in this NFC conference final! From the first play, the former Giants runner pierced the Commanders defense and scored a 60-yard touchdown. On his second take of the ball, he doubled the lead to already give his team a comfortable lead after less than 10 minutes of play. The first minutes only augur the defensive nightmare that the Commanders will experience throughout the evening.
-In total, the Philadelphia Eagles will cover 229 yards on the ground in this conference final and will score no less than 7 touchdowns on the ground in the evening. Touchdowns which will be scored three times by Saquon Barkley and three other times by Jalen Hurts, always a master in the art of the tush push. An addition which will be toughened at the very end of the meeting by Will Shipley who will also participate in the party.
Washington loses turnover battle
In a game as important as an NFC conference final, it is essential not to make mistakes! The Washington Commanders, who have a still young team, will have learned it the hard way this Sunday. Four times, the Commanders returned the ball directly into the hands of the Eagles. If some turnovers were the result of a rush at the end of the match, like the interception thrown by Jayden Daniels in a desperate manner, others were, however, more problematic. Perfect example with this fumble on a kickoff return which will allow the Eagles to take off just before halftime.
The Washington Commanders will however have tried to reverse the trend in this NFC conference final. Trailing by 11 points in the first quarter and listless in attack, the Commanders will attempt and succeed in a fake punt which will wake up the entire attack. But the flashes of genius of this surprise franchise were too sporadic to really worry the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Philadelphia Eagles therefore qualify for their second Super Bowl in the last three seasons. They will meet on February 9 the winner of the match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills. For the Commanders, despite the disappointment, the season still remains a clear success for this young team which will have to confirm in 2025.
