INTERNATIONAL – Rising tensions. US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday January 26 that he had ordered a series of retaliations, including customs taxes, against Colombia, which turned back military planes carrying irregular migrants expelled by the United States.

And the new Republican president accused left-wing Colombian President Gustavo Petro on his Truth Social network of “ not allow two repatriation flights from the United States to land in Colombia, with a large number of illegal criminals on board”.

Customs taxes, visa revocation…

In retaliation, Donald Trump announced 25% taxes on all Colombian goods entering the United States, which will be increased to 50% in a week, as well as a ban on entry into the United States and a revocation visas for Colombian government officials, its allies and supporters, he said.

Donald Trump also mentions “reinforced inspections” customs and border police for all Colombian nationals and goods coming from this country “for reasons of national security” as well as banking and financial sanctions.

“These measures are just the beginning”he warns, accusing the Colombian government of evading its “legal obligations to accept the return of criminals that they forced the United States” to welcome.

Colombia responds

The Colombian president on Sunday demanded that the United States deal with “dignity and respect” its nationals expelled, while announcing having turned back American military planes while transporting. “We will welcome our nationals on civilian planes, without treating them like criminals”he declared in the morning on the X network.

The Colombian presidency then announced that it would send its plane “to facilitate the dignified return of nationals who were to arrive in the country this morning, by expulsion flights”.

At the same time, Colombia also announced it would impose customs duties of 25% on American imports.
