Washington (Reuters) – The US Senate confirmed on Friday the appointment of Pete Hegseth to the post of defense secretary.

The appointment of Pete Hegseth was approved by 51 votes to 50, the vice-president JD Vance holding the decisive vote.

Three Republican senators have spoken against the appointment of Pete Hegseth, as well as all the Democrats and as an independent senator.

Former Fox News host and veteran of the American army, Pete Hegseth, is one of the most controversial personalities to have been appointed to the Pentagon.

Aged 44, he insurgated against initiatives in favor of diversity, equity and integration into the army, in accordance with his predecessor, Lloyd Austin, had been appointed due of its skin color.

Before his appointment, Pete Hegseth also opposed the presence of women in combat roles.

His confirmation hearing had been marked by accusations which had aroused the concern of elected officials, in particular an accusation of sexual assault in 2017, which did not give rise to prosecution, as well as accusation of domestic violence to the ‘Contrary to his second wife. Pete Hegseth firmly denied these accusations.
