What is this adaptation of Werber’s novel The Ants?
The game is an adaptation of the eponymous novels by French author Bernard Werber, which tells the story of an ant civilization. In the novel, insects are personified to the extreme, forming a people with its society, its morals and even its own language. The book’s narrative gives the impression of following human characters, into the fascinating world of insects.
The game, published by Microids, takes the main elements of the novel in a real-time strategy game, on the scale of insects. You will have to manage your ant colony, win battles to colonize regions and develop them. Between the strategy game and the city builder, The Ants leaves you in control of your empire. It’s up to the players to make their lands prosper, protect them against the numerous enemies, in battle sequences with an impressive bestiary.
At this price, is Les Fourmis a good deal?
Less than €25 is a very good deal for a title that is far from perfect, but which will captivate its audience with its unique style, as long as they have an interest in ants and other garden insects. Microids, accustomed to adapting licenses (The Smurfs, Asterix and Obelixor more recently Tintin Reporter – The Cigars of the Pharaoh) knows how to make an effective game on a small budget. Of course, the gameplay doesn’t invent anything, but the Unreal Engine 5 does wonders to bring the fascinating world of ants to life.
It’s a shame, however, that the user interface is a little dated and often intrusive. Fortunately, nothing prohibitive to enjoy an original title overall, during the twenty hours that the game lasts.
