A fire broke out in the basement of a hotel in Carinthia on Thursday evening, leading to the evacuation of 390 people from the accommodation in Tröpolach, located in the district of Hermagor.
Five people were treated on site by emergency teams on suspicion of smoke inhalation. Four Danish tourists were taken to hospital, but were released in the afternoon.
The fire started around 11:15 p.m. in a sauna. The fire alarm system sounded, leading the hotel owner and two of his guests to try to put out the fire using portable fire extinguishers despite the atmosphere already being saturated with smoke. Several teams of firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, finally brought the flame under control. A total of six firefighters, with eleven vehicles and 92 emergency workers, were mobilized, with the Red Crescent sending three vehicles.
All hotel guests – consisting of groups of Danish students accompanied by their teachers – were able to leave the building of their own accord. They waited in their tour buses and in a gym while the firefighting operation ended. From 1 a.m., they were able to return to their rooms. Furthermore, all the people transported to hospital had already been released on Thursday afternoon, a Kabeg spokesperson told the APA agency upon request.
-Police said the cause of the heavy smoke emission was a smoldering fire in the electric sauna furnace. According to statements by the Carinthian police, it is likely that the origin is linked to radiant heat. The value of the damage was not yet estimated Thursday.
