What would you do if you stood next to a mermaid for 30 minutes every day? SAMU, firefighters, police/gendarmerie, whatever, let’s choose the one you don’t like the least. Well, that’s the daily lot of many citizens.
This is what Bruitparif says in a study. The association relies on its “Hydre” sound radar, intended to control and sanction vehicles based on their noise. A sound evaluation carried out in the 17th arrondissement, with one of these radars, reported alarming results. Fanny Mietlicki, director of Bruitparif, explains to France 3 Paris Île-de-France:
“For example, we characterized that there were on average 90 sirens per day. Which represents a cumulative duration of almost 30 minutes of sirens if we put them end to end.”
“Sometimes we especially have ambulances that use two sirens at the same time: their classic siren and then an American siren to help them be spotted, and that’s a double whammy for local residents.”
Will mermaids evolve?
Thus, 44% of ambient noise emanates from sirens, and 10% from horns. Fanny Mietlicki goes into detail. “We have a lot of sirens from penitentiary vehicles: 72%. Afterwards, we have 13% of sirens which are more firefighter type and then 5% from SAMU, 5% from ambulances and 5% from the gendarmerie,” he explains. -She.
In the meantime, residents are complaining. And measures could be taken. The prison officers first explained themselves. They are forced “to use their siren more since the attack on a prison van in Incarville in May 2024”, according to Geoffroy Boulard, mayor (LR) of the 17th arrondissement of Paris. The other services are working on this subject, as the city councilor details:
-“The Paris firefighters gave us an update on the progress of replacing their fleet of vehicles with sirens which are adapted and which are less loud. On the police side, a circular was sent to all civil servants, in particular from the judicial police, specialized units (…) which cross our district to go to the Paris court.”
We bet that this will be enough to calm things down. Especially since a new study will be launched on this subject of noise. The latter will be financed to the tune of 20,000 euros by the Parisian municipality. And sensors to be installed in new places, on the boulevards of Montparnasse, Port-Royal, Saint-Marcel.
