Yes, but there you go… There is a problem that is disturbing customers! Because the price of products could well be increasing. This results from the plan to remove exemption from customs duties. And this, for shipments worth less than 150 euros.
Until now, there were no customs fees if the value of purchases did not exceed 150 euros. But there will be change! Because the Chamber of Electronic Commerce wants to change that.
According to our colleagues at wiadomosci, »Many sellers specifically declare lower values for individual shipments in order to protect customers from additional charges… and therefore to guarantee them cheaper purchases and encourage them to place subsequent orders. »
According to information relayed by the press, this bill would therefore aim to apply an additional tax on online purchases of low-cost products, from sites like Temu or AliExpress.
So you understand, customers of stores on sites like AliExpress or Temu will have to pay more each time for their purchases. And this, regardless of the amount of the order. Costs in more that could discourage !
A surprising price increase
Even worse! These costs could therefore lead to a decline in popularity of this type of service. Because buying items on Temu would no longer be as profitable.
-So to make the costs profitable, regulars will have to buy strategically. This will allow them to recoup delivery costs. But small impulsive purchases (shells, kitchen utensils) could become much less advantageous.
Especially if they already come with shipping costs. So it’s a big blow for customers. But not only that! Please note that this price increase would also hit resellers or dropshippers who use Temu as a source of supply.
They would find themselves facing a dilemma… That of passing on the increase on their customers… As a result, they risk losing their competitiveness. Even more! They may also have to reduce their margin to maintain attractive prices.
The situation is not new! Because on several occasions, other e-commerce platforms have had to adjust to laws aimed at taxing imported products. The result often takes the form of a partial or total pass-through in price.
It remains to be seen whether Temu will be able to create enough margin to continue to offer interesting deals. Some observers believe that the platform could rely on its logistics.
But also on its purchasing power to negotiate prices with its suppliers. Others, on the contrary, are betting on a slowdown in sales. It is therefore a matter to follow.
