NHL: Matt Rempe mocks the Sens; Igor Shesterkin knocked down by Brady Tkachuk

The New York Rangers served up a correction to the Ottawa Senators by a score of 5-0 on Tuesday evening.

Among the players at the heart of this victory, the tough guy Matt Rempe stood out, but for a maneuver which allowed him to score his first goal since February 2024. He hit the target in the third period after a great feint to make it 3-0 Rangers and it was from this moment that frustration spread to Ottawa and its captain Brady Tkachuk.

The forward headed towards Igor Shesterkin’s net and made contact with the latter to knock him down in his semi-circle. It didn’t take much for a melee to break out while the goalkeeper regained his senses.

As soon as he got up, Shesterkin rushed towards Tkachuk who greeted him with a left, sending the goaltender back against the ice. He got back on his skates once again to rub shoulders with the captain of the Sens who also had a visit from Rempe. Nothing to take away from Tkachuk’s frustration, he has not amassed a point in his last eight games.

After the penalties awarded, the Rangers played on the power play, except that Shesterkin was again a target. He was recovering the puck behind his net when he fell to the ice while being hooked by Michael Amadio. The latter found himself in the penalty box, thus offering a numerical advantage of two players to the Rangers.

The New York squad took advantage of this chance to knock out the Sens with two quick goals. Artemi Panarin scored his 20th goal of the season and Will Cuylle followed it up 56 seconds later by making the red light sparkle.

Shesterkin recorded his third shutout of the season, stopping 20 pucks.

Alexis Lafrenière opened the scoring at the end of the first period with his 13th goal of the campaign. He also had an assist in the game.

Arthur Kaliyev surprised Leevi Merilainen with a shot from the corner of the boards which hit the post and rebounded against the goalkeeper to finish in the net. The striker thought he would add a few moments later, but his goal was disallowed due to offside.

The Sens still made a change of goalkeeper at this time. Merilainen allowed two goals on 16 shots. In relief, Anton Forsberg gave up three times on 13 shots.

With this defeat, the Senators, the Canadiens and Montreal and the Boston Bruins each have 52 points in the standings. The two Canadian teams find themselves among the positions of the teams drafted in the East having played one game less than the Bruins.

Senators forward Josh Norris left the game after falling on the ice and hitting his chin on the ice. The organization said its removal was for preventative measures.

Victory sticks to the Flyers tonight

Rasmus Ristolainen scored in overtime and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1.

Ristolainen only had to push a loose puck behind the goal line with only 26 seconds left on the clock. Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider tried to clear the puck from his goalie’s semi-circle, but it stuck on the post and Ristolainen took advantage.

Joel Farabee scored the other goal for the Flyers, who won their third straight game and five of their last six. Samuel Ersson made 27 saves.

Ben Chiarot scored the only goal for the Red Wings, who lost a third straight game and four of their last five. Alex stopped 24 pucks.

The Red Wings will begin a three-game homestand on Thursday, which will begin against the Montreal Canadiens. Only five points separate the two teams in the standings.

The Habs won the first two meetings between the two teams this season.
