The Head of State, Bassirou Diomaye Faye received, on Tuesday afternoon, a delegation from British Petroleum (BP) led by its executive vice-president, who came to inform him of the start of production at the GTA gas field.

On its Facebook page, the Presidency of the Republic informs that Mr. Gordon Birell came to inform the Head of State of the effective start of gas production from the GTA field, in perfect collaboration with the two countries through their ministry in charge of Energy.

The Grand Tortue/Ahmeyin (GTA) natural gas deposit was discovered in 2015 with the drilling of the Tortue-1 (Ahmeyin-1) well in Mauritania and the Guembeul-1 well in Senegal. The deposit contains approximately 20 TCF of natural gas or 530 billion Nm3.

According to PETROSEN, which is the instrument for implementing the oil policy of the State of Senegal, this project ultimately aims to produce a plateau of 10 million tonnes of LNG/year from the GTA natural gas field located offshore. 120 km from Saint-Louis du Senegal. The British company British Petroleum is the main operator of the project. The consortium (SN) is made up of BP with 53.3%, Komos with 26.7% and PETROSEN with 20%.

The GTA deposit will be developed in several phases. The start of production of the first phase, the Final Investment Decision of which was taken at the end of December 2018, was planned for 2024 at a rate of 2.5 million tonnes/year of LNG and 35 million cubic feet/day of natural gas for national consumption (electricity production).
