It’s now official: during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, Ross Ulbricht, founder of the black market Silk Road, was finally pardoned by the new president of the United States.

During his campaign, Donald Trump participated in various events, including the Bitcoin conference in Nashville and the Libertarian convention, where he promised to release Ross Ulbricht on his first day in the White House, if he was elected.

It took one more day, but Donald Trump finally kept his promise and even called Ross Ulbricht’s mother to tell her of her son’s release.
Donald Trump said in a post on the Truth Network:
“I just called Ross William Ulbricht’s mother to let her know that in honor of her and the libertarian movement, which has supported me so strongly, I had the pleasure of signing a full pardon and unconditionally for her son, Ross. The immoral individuals who contributed to his conviction were among the same extremists involved in the government’s current political weapon against me. He was sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years. Ridiculous ! »

Bitcoin owes a lot to Ross Ulbricht and Silk Road
Ross’ sentence was considered by many to be disproportionate and unfair. According to him, he had only created a marketplace aimed at promoting a free market, based on libertarian principles, where buyers and sellers could meet without moderation of the goods or services exchanged. However, the Silk Road affair allowed the United States justice system to make an example of it.

Silk Road also played a key role in the adoption of the Bitcoin blockchain.
