The events took place on Tuesday January 21, at midday, at the Aix-Luynes penitentiary center.

Stéphane Angelotti was found dead, hanged in his cell in the prison located in Bouches-du-Rhône. He had been incarcerated there since his indictment on December 8, 2024, as part of the investigation into the assassination of Paul-Félix Paoli.

According to initial information, the 54-year-old Corsican inmate took advantage of an outing to his fellow inmate’s visiting room to kill himself by hanging.

An investigation was opened by the Aix-en-Provence public prosecutor’s office to determine the precise causes and circumstances of the death.

Reached by telephone this Tuesday early evening by the editorial staff of France 3 Corse, his lawyer, Me Jean-Sébastien de Casalta, “did not wish to make any comments at this stage regarding the death of his client”.

Stéphane Angelotti was imprisoned a month and a half ago following his indictment in the investigation into the assassination of Paul-Félix Paoli.

At the head of several companies, notably in real estate and construction, this 51-year-old man was shot dead on the night of August 23 to 24, 2023 in Poggio-Mezzana, in the parking lot of La Caravelle, a restaurant whose he was the manager.

Led by an investigating magistrate from the Specialized Interregional Jurisdiction of , the investigations led to the indictment of four people, including three last December, for “organized gang homicide” and “criminal association”.

Among them were Stéphane Angelotti, Jérôme Regetti and Cédric Courbey. Paul-André Contadini was indicted and placed in pre-trial detention in March 2024. Before the investigating magistrate, the four men all contested their involvement in this affair.

The investigation made spectacular progress following Marco Raduano’s revelations. Presented as one of the leaders of Società foggiana, a mafia group from Puglia, this Italian was arrested in Aleria in February 2024 while he was on the run since his escape from a Sardinian prison a year earlier. The operation was carried out jointly by the French and Italian authorities.

Subsequently becoming a collaborator of justice in his country, Marco Raduano then confessed to having committed the murder of Paul-Félix Paoli.

He accuses himself of having killed him. Nurri, bleached in a nursery in Corsica during his escape, Raduano would have agreed to commit this crime as a sign of thanks for his Corsican friends”explained Nicolas Bessone, public prosecutor of Marseille, during a press conference in mid-December held with three of his transalpine counterparts.

The latter, including the national anti-mafia prosecutor, welcomed “an emblematic investigation of cooperation between France and Italy”.

In this same case, Marco Furfaro, a nurseryman from Lucciana suspected of having helped Marco Raduano during his escape to Corsica, appealed to the Court of Cassation after the investigating chamber of the Court of Appeal had, on December 12, validated his extradition to Italy. At the hearing, he said “fear for your safety” if he was extradited.

This Tuesday, January 21, his cassation appeal was rejected by the highest court of the French judiciary.
