When Elon Musk attacks… China – La Nouvelle Tribune

The relationship between Elon Musk and the Chine has long been marked by calculated caution. The boss of Tesla has cultivated close ties with the Chinese authorities, heaping praise on the country’s economic dynamism and its capacity for innovation. This strategy allowed it to obtain significant advantages, including the installation of a Tesla mega-factory in Shanghai and privileged access to the Chinese automobile market. The American manufacturer also benefits from a rare exemption from the strict rules imposed on foreign companies, allowing it to operate without a mandatory local partner.

An unexpected diplomatic turn

The conciliatory tone ofElon Musk towards Beijing, however, has just experienced a notable change. The billionaire has openly criticized the imbalance in Sino-American digital relations, pointing out the impossibility for its social network X to operate in China while TikTok thrives in the United States. This position arises in a particular context: hours before TikTok was reinstated on American soil, Musk spoke out against its ban, citing the defense of free speech. A position which is similar to that of Donald Trumpwith whom the boss of Tesla maintains increasingly close relations.

Between business and politics: the fragile balance

The unusual virulence of Musk’s criticism of China contrasts with his major economic interests in the country. Tesla plays a crucial part of its future: the Chinese market, world leader in electric vehicles with 11 million units sold last year, represents a strategic challenge for the manufacturer. This duality was illustrated during a meeting the same day between Musk and the Chinese vice-president Han Zhengpresent for the inauguration of Trump. The billionaire reaffirmed his desire to deepen his cooperation with China, while his interlocutor encouraged American companies to strengthen their economic ties with the country. This delicate diplomatic dance demonstrates the complexity of relations between Western technological giants and the Middle Kingdom, where commercial considerations collide with issues of digital sovereignty.
