Türkiye – Kurdish journalists Nazim Daştan and Cihan Bilgin killed by a Turkish drone last month in Rojava have been described as “terrorists” by Turkish prosecutors who prosecuted three journalists who covered the protests denouncing the murders of Daştan and Bilgin.
Three journalists accused of making “terrorist propaganda” face up to eight years in prison for their coverage of the murders of Kurdish reporters Nazim Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in Rojava during a Turkish drone strike last month.
Gerçek Gündem editor-in-chief Seyhan Avşar, T24 editor-in-chief Doğan Akın and T24 editor-in-chief Candan Yıldız are accused of “dissemination of misleading information” and of “terrorist propaganda”.
The Istanbul prosecutor accused Daştan and Bilgin of being “members of terrorist organizations” “neutralized” during anti-terrorist operations. According to the charges, presenting their deaths as a murder committed by security forces constitutes a criminal act.
The T24 article, published on December 20, reports a statement from the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association regarding the deaths of Daştan and Bilgin. The statement said the journalists were killed by an airstrike on the road between the Tishrin dam and Sirin in northern Syria while covering events in the region.
-The article, which contains no editorial comments, also cites a condemnation from the Press Workers’ Union of Turkey (DİSK Basın-İş), which states: “We condemn attacks targeting journalists. Those responsible for the deaths of journalists in conflict zones in Palestine and Syria must be held accountable under the law. »
In his social media posts after the incident, Avşar expressed his frustration at the lack of reaction. “Since yesterday, I have had difficulty digesting this news. Two of our journalist colleagues lost their lives after being bombed. Politicians are silent, journalists are silent, NGOs are silent,” she wrote. “Does defending someone’s rights require that they share our opinions or our style of journalism? In whose eyes are we terrorists? »
Daştan and Bilgin were killed last month while covering clashes between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA/ANS) in northern Syria.
Over the past two years, several Kurdish journalists have been killed by Turkish drone strikes in northern Iraq and Syria, where Turkey is carrying out operations against Kurdish armed groups. The Turkish government has remained silent on most of these cases. (Bianet)
