200-megapixel periscopic telephoto lenses are becoming increasingly popular among Chinese smartphone makers, after Vivo introduced the X100 Ultra and used the same module on the X200 Pro.

Here’s what we know

Among the five super-flagships scheduled for release this year in China, three of them will feature a 200-megapixel camera. This has become a trend in the market, and now it is known that Samsung might also join this trend.

According to new information from a Digital Chat Station insider, the Korean company has begun evaluating the use of a 200-megapixel periscopic telephoto lens with a 1/1.5-inch sensor, which is slightly smaller than the 1/1.4 inch sensor used by Vivo in its models. If Samsung decides to use this sensor, the new camera could appear in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which is scheduled for release next year.

Some sources also suggest that the smartphone could be called S26 Note, which would expand the company’s smartphone lineup.

This would be an important step for Samsung, as it would allow it to compete with other manufacturers who have already introduced such a powerful camera. Given the popularity of 200-megapixel cameras in the market, the Galaxy S26 Ultra would likely be one of the most powerful smartphones on the market in 2026, compared to flagships from other companies such as Vivo, which will be launched in early 2024. As they say, better late than never.

However, it is possible that these rumors are not confirmed and that the company decides to abandon this step. Development of the S26 Ultra is in its early stages and any decisions are subject to change before the official announcement.
