The group stage of the 2024/25 edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League concluded this Sunday, January 19, revealing the full list of eight clubs qualified for the prestigious knockout stage.
The 6th day closed a group stage full of twists and turns, seeing the 2016 champions, Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), as well as MC Alger (Algeria), clinch the last tickets for the quarter-finals.
The defending champion, Al Ahly SC (Egypt), joins Al Hilal (Sudan), AS FAR (Morocco), Esperance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Orlando Pirates (South Africa) and Pyramids FC (Egypt) , completing a prestigious picture for the next stage of the competition.
Among the qualified teams, six have already registered their names on the competition list. The defending champion, Al Ahly SC, is aiming for a historic 13th title, while Esperance de Tunis already has four trophies to its credit. AS FAR, Mamelodi Sundowns, MC Alger and Orlando Pirates have each won the trophy once.
Al Hilal has established itself as the revelation of this edition, just like Pyramids FC, who aspire to follow in the footsteps of their Egyptian counterparts on the continental scene. The latter club, which is competing in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time, hopes to extend its impressive run in the tournament.
The CAF TotalEnergies Champions League remains the most coveted title in club football in Africa, a competition which has grown exponentially over the seasons.
-With all eight teams qualified for the quarter-finals, CAF will soon announce details of the draw which will determine the knockout stages scheduled to begin in March.
