The new agreement signed between Russia and Iran on Friday marks a major step forward in bilateral relations between the two countries. Initiated in 2022, work on this strategic document was finalized in June 2023. It targets objectives for stable and sustainable development, both for the two nations and for the entire region.
Strengthened partnership for the future
This agreement lays the foundations for a new relationship between Russia and Iran. The dialogue which preceded its signing was distinguished by a constructive and friendly approach, reflecting the priority given by Moscow to strengthening ties with Tehran. The two countries share common positions on the majority of foreign policy issues and pursue independent global paths, resisting external pressures and sanctions deemed illegitimate.
The development of economic cooperation occupies a central place in the agreement. One of the key projects is the North-South International Transport Corridor, which opens new commercial and strategic opportunities for both partners.
Regional and global cooperation
In addition to the economic dimensions, the agreement reaffirms the commitment of the two countries to regional stability. Russia and Iran commit to working together to maintain peace in the South Caucasus, promoting diplomatic solutions to existing tensions. Regarding Syria, the two countries are continuing their efforts to achieve a comprehensive solution, relying on joint initiatives and coordination mechanisms.
The document also addresses the issue of Gaza, expressing hope that regional agreements will bring lasting stability and prevent further escalations.
-Technology transfer in the field of renewable energies
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stressed that this agreement constitutes a clear roadmap for the future. It covers various areas, ranging from economic and technological collaboration to humanitarian aid. The focus is on strengthening defense and security cooperation, increasing trade, as well as energy production and export.
Furthermore, the agreement provides for measures to facilitate the transfer of technologies in the field of renewable energies, a strategic sector for both countries. The tourism component is not left out, with the establishment of simplified travel conditions to encourage the flow of visitors between the two countries.
Finally, the agreement provides for a strengthening of cultural exchanges, with the creation of joint programs intended to promote mutual understanding and interactions between Russian and Iranian civil societies.
