FC Porto slipped to third place in the Portuguese Primeira Liga following a 3-1 defeat to Gil Vicente.

After the match, FC Porto player Gonçalo Borges shared his thoughts on the team’s performance.

“In the first half we didn’t create many chances, but in the second half we created a lot of chances and we fought hard. We didn’t start the match well. Everyone connected with the club needs to think about the current situation. This is a difficult time for all of us: players, fans, coaches and managers. Having joined the club at the age of 14, I know what it means to be Porto. I understand the importance of winning and overcoming difficult times. Above all, I understand what it is to be a man. In times like this, men are needed. You will see commitment in the locker room in the future, with everyone giving their best on the pitch. I assure you there will be no lack of dedication, not for a minute,” Borges said.

Asked about his performance, Borges added: “I always give my all when I play, because I have represented this club for many years and I know what that means. In the second half I felt the team had a different attitude; we were stingy with energy and determined. However, we failed in key moments. »

Reflecting on the recent red cards received by his teammates, he commented: “Honestly, our focus has to be on what’s happening on the pitch. Yes, I approached the referee out of emotion after the match, but that doesn’t change the result. We have to show attitude during the match. After the final whistle we cannot change the score; we need to work on our performance and think about the next match, considering how each of us can contribute more. »

As supporters demand the resignation of coach Vitor Bruno, Borges spoke of the players’ support: “What we can promise is to always give our best, whether under coach Vitor or another. We train with him every day and have built a bond with him. At FC Porto, when results are not there, the coach takes the blame. However, in this specific case, responsibility is shared. The fans need to understand that it’s not just Coach Vitor’s fault; we all have a role to play. Ultimately, I’m here to work, and decisions about the coach are for others to make. For now, he is the head coach of FC Porto, and we support him. »

Today’s defeat marked FC Porto’s third consecutive defeat in all competitions, leaving them with a total of 40 points after 18 days. Goals from Pablo in the 11th minute, Josué in the 53rd minute and Félix Correia in the 90+4th minute from the penalty spot secured the victory for Gil Vicente. Gonçalo Borges managed to score for the ‘Dragões’ shortly after halftime in the 48th minute, but the team finished with ten men after Nico González’s red card in the 83rd minute.
