Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United must evolve beyond their current reliance on transition play as they prepare to face Brighton this Sunday. The Red Devils are looking to capitalize on their recent 3-1 win over Southampton, a match where Amad Diallo scored an impressive hat-trick in the dying minutes to secure victory.
Diallo’s remarkable hat-trick in 12 minutes dashed Southampton’s hopes after the hosts initially took the lead through a Manuel Ugarte own goal. Despite the crucial victory, concerns remain over United’s performances, including their inability to dominate matches against lesser opponents. In their previous meeting, they earned a tough 2-2 draw against Liverpool, followed by a penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Asked about United’s tendency to play reactively rather than proactively, Amorim said: ‘It’s something you can observe in the past; we were, in the past, a transition team. And we still are. We feel that we are having difficulty creating chances in the final third. This is the most difficult time to train against low blocks and to create situations.’
-Amorim also stressed the need for training and time to integrate changes into their playing style. ‘They are a team that likes to wait for the right moment to hit in transition, but we need to change that mindset. . To implement this change we also need to make sure we win games.’
Currently, Brighton are five points ahead of United in the table and won their previous meeting in August thanks to a last-minute goal from Joao Pedro. For the next match, Manchester United welcome Diogo Dalot back after a one-match suspension, while Luke Shaw is unlikely to return, alongside absent players Mason Mount, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof.
