Now aged 22 and forming a team with Félix Belval (21) and Trifluvien Mathieu Couture (22), the young team had quite a surprise by qualifying for the elite portion of the prestigious Wodapalooza competition which will be held in Miami from January 23 to 26.
“It’s really a surprise to find yourself at the elite level. We are really young to take part in such a tough competition. We will face a much more physically mature competition. A crossfit athlete will reach his peak at around 28 to 30 years old,” explains the computer science and management student.
Bonenfant assures that he and his friends did not set a specific goal before leaving for Wodapalooza. There are 30 teams registered for the competition who all received the valuable invitation to the event after qualifying by completing six tests.
“We really go there to learn and have fun. There are going to be participants who are legends of our sport like Jeffrey Adler and Patrick Vellner. This will be a good opportunity to observe them out of the corner of your eye and learn. We’re really looking forward to it!”
The friendly young man even mentioned that he would not hesitate to take photos with his idols.

Nothing destined the Gaspésie to turn to crossfit since he played soccer and futsal competitively in his adolescence. He assures that he got the bite very quickly.
-“As soon as I started training, it just clicked that this was what I wanted to do on a regular basis. I’m very competitive and I immediately loved the concept of doing better in the room than the day before. Crossfit is simply surpassing oneself,” explains the person who attends the Lévis crossfit center.
Close-knit team
Bonenfant also explained that team spirit was important in this type of competition.
“It’s one aspect, but it’s not all. It’s an individual sport where you need the results of each participant to do well collectively. It definitely helps you push more when you respect the guys you perform with and they encourage you.”
Even though Bonenfant has no experience in an international competition of this type, he mentions that his teammate Mathieu Couture does.
“He competed last year and he prepared us well for what’s coming next week. The competition will be held on the beach and it is generally a festive atmosphere. We should be able to enjoy it afterwards,” he ends with a laugh.
