A raw gold transporter from Abéché, capital of the Ouaddaï region in the east of the country, was targeted by armed robbers as he took the road to N’Djamena with a cargo of more than 25 kilos gold, January 5, 2025.

According to a gold merchant from Abéché, at least 20 traders had entrusted raw, unworked gold to a transporter so that their merchandise could be transported to N’Djamena where it is usually resold or sent to the Middle East. But as it left Abéché, the transporter was attacked by a car with four armed individuals on board.

The transporter and all of its cargo were taken by the four robbers to Tiné in the province of Ouadi Fira, on the border with Sudan. This is where three of them were arrested in the company of an accomplice a few days ago.

According to a source close to the case, the arrest made it possible to lay hands on the weapons used in the robbery, on money in foreign currency as well as on a small part of the stolen gold. Alone “ 1.6 kg of gold was found among the more than 25 kg of the cargo. The extent of the damage is estimated at approximately 1.2 billion CFA francs [environ 1,8 million d’euros] », details the source, before explaining that the stolen raw gold is Chadian, extracted in the gold panning sites of Kouri Bougoudi and Kouri 35 in Faya-Largeau.
