Frankfurt deals Dortmund blow as Marmoush eyes Manchester City move

FRANKFURT, January 18 — Eintracht Frankfurt dealt Borussia Dortmund another blow with a 2-0 home win, coinciding with the early departure of Omar Marmoush, who is considering a move to Manchester City.

In a surprising turn of events, Marmoush was left out of the squad shortly before kick-off, a decision made amid speculation over his imminent move to City. Frankfurt showed a clinical and controlled performance against their visitors.

The locals took the lead quickly with a goal from striker Hugo Ekitike, while Dortmund struggled to create clear chances despite good possession.

In added time, Oscar Hojlund took advantage of an error by the Dortmund midfielder. After recovering the ball, he rushed 40 meters before skillfully slipping the ball past Gregor Kobel, who remained on his guard.

Mario Götze praised Marmoush’s contributions, saying: “We know what we had in Omar. An incredible player, great character. It’s always a shame when a player leaves, but the team played well against Dortmund today ‘today.’

This defeat marks the third in a row for Dortmund, who have only one success in their last six matches. They are in danger of slipping to 11th place, currently finding themselves 11 points behind Frankfurt, who are aiming for their first top-four finish in three decades.

Dortmund midfielder Pascal Groß expressed his frustration, saying: “It’s a sport of results and at the end of the day we failed to get a result. It’s extremely difficult. ”

Despite ongoing difficulties, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has reaffirmed his support for coach Nuri Sahin. “We will continue. Nuri has our confidence. We are disappointed and dissatisfied with our position. This is not a team that should be where we are in the table,” he commented after the match.

The anticipation surrounding Marmoush’s potential transfer was palpable. Sporting director Markus Kroesche said the striker’s exclusion was due to a “very, very likely” move to City.

Dortmund started the match promisingly, with Serhou Guirassy hitting the post from a cross from Julian Ryerson in the first eight minutes. However, it was Frankfurt’s Ekitike who opened the scoring in the 18th minute, avoiding a dormant Dortmund defense to head home a precise cross from Rasmus Kristensen.

Dortmund maintained their usual dominance of possession but struggled to break through Frankfurt’s defense. A controversial moment came late in the match when Nnamdi Collins fouled Jamie Gittens in the box, but the referee dismissed penalty complaints and booked the Dortmund captain for contesting.

As Dortmund pushed for an equalizer with tactical changes, Hojlund seized the opportunity to steal the ball from Emre Can and secured victory for Frankfurt with a well-placed finish.

After the final whistle, an emotional Marmoush took the field to bid farewell to his teammates for what could be the last time. Götze reflected on the situation, saying: “He helped the team and I think you could see from the pictures how much we appreciate him. We are happy for him — that’s part of football.”

Meanwhile, league leaders Bayern Munich are set to host Wolfsburg, while reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen, who sit four points behind, will play at home against Borussia.
