Anthony Santander: discussions with the Blue Jays intensify

The momentum in the Blue Jays’ butter in the Roki Sasaki file hurts.

Not only is the club no better than this morning, but I have a hard time believing that this will encourage players to sign long term in town. And I’m including Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the mix.

But the Blue Jays keep trying.

Because the club’s executives are trying to save their jobs and the team’s 2025 season, they will continue to be interested in everyone who is on the market right now.

And that includes Anthony Santander.

The powerful outfielder, who is ambidextrous, has long been a target of the club. But now, Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi report that negotiations have been more intense since this morning with the free agent, who hit 44 home runs and produced 102 runs with the Baltimore Orioles in 2024.

This is not the first time his name has come up in rumors in Toronto. And if he hasn’t signed yet, it’s perhaps because the offer he has on the table from Toronto, he would like to have… elsewhere.

Who knows?

If Toronto can sign him, it will be a step in the right direction. It would take more, but Santander cannot fill three of Toronto’s deficiencies at the same time: he is only one player.

With Alex Bregman seemingly headed elsewhere, Santander may be, along with Pete Alonso, one of the Blue Jays’ last chances to significantly improve their offense. But will he sign?
