After the fires that devastated Los Angeles, the disappearance of the genius director, David Lynch, announced by his family on Thursday January 16, is once again putting Hollywood into mourning. The American star, aged 78, suffered from pulmonary emphysema, a progressive disease which forced the filmmaker to remain connected to a machine to breathe artificially.
Emotion of his favorite actors
Very moved, several actors that David Lynch directed reacted, thus showing their admiration and gratitude towards the director. Kyle MacLachlan, who got the first role of his career in the film Dune released in 1984, told Instagram how much he owed David Lynch: “He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and really my life, to his vision.» The American who became the director’s favorite actor – 4 films and 3 seasons of the series Twin Peaks -, also specified that he “lost a dear friend who imagined a future for [lui] et [lui] allowed us to travel to worlds that [il] will not have [t] never been able to conceive alone».
Naomi Watts, one of two female actresses in Mulholland Drive (2001) posted two photos and a video on social networks illustrating his link with the missing filmmaker. The actress who revealed herself to the general public in the role of Diane, also lent her voice in the filmmaker’s latest feature film, Inland Empire in 2006. On Instagram, Naomi Watts recalled that David Lynch was “a curious man, radiant with light, speaking words from another era” and that «il seemed to live in a changed world, one that I feel more than lucky to have been a small part of.» Naomi Watts’ co-star in Mulholland DriveLaura Harring, also sent a last word to the man who signed the biggest success of his career, wishing him to rest in peace, while assuming that he will continue to “creating films, writing, painting and meditating from above.»
Tribute from directors
The creator of Schindler’s Listd’E.Tof Jurassik Park and many other successes, Steven Spielberg recalled in an interview for the newspaper Variety that the “Lynch films have already stood the test of time and always will“. Steven Spielberg, who achieved the feat of putting David Lynch in front of the camera in a short scene in his film The Fabelmans (2022), considers its success to be that of “a singular dreamer and visionary who made films that seemed handmade» and that «the world will regret».
James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squid (2021) and numerous films from the Marvel universe, he described on X to what extent David Lynch had “inspired him and so many others“. Ron Howard, author of Grinch and of Da Vinci Codespointed out in a tweet onproved that radical experimentation could result in unforgettable cinema.»

In France, the César Academy, where he was awarded twice for the best foreign film of the year, Elephant Man in 1982 and Mulholland Drive in 2002, posted a tribute onthis cinema legend who passed awaye” and that [ils] will not forget [t] Never“. The Cannes Film Festival, of which Lynch chaired the jury in 2002, expressed oninfinite sadness» faced with the loss of “a unique and visionary artist whose work will have influenced cinema like few others before“. The American filmmaker received two awards at Cannes: a Palme d’Or for Sailor et Lula in 1990 and the Directing Prize for Mulholland Drive in 2001.
The French actress Marion Cotillard, who had not appeared in any of David Lynch’s films, but in a Dior ad directed by him, Lady Blue Shanghai, published on his Instagram account a screenshot of the scene commented with these words: “I’m so sad» et «grateful that our paths crossed».
Finally, an unexpected reaction from NASA on X: “In memory of David Lynch, we will continue to explore the beyond and the unknown. We will focus not on loss, but on what we have gained in the years we have shared this planet with you. We will see you again in our dreams.» An inspiration blown beyond terrestrial borders.
