So long David Lynch | Gonzo

This is undoubtedly the saddest news since the start of 2025, the immense David Lynch died in the fury of the fires in his beloved City of Angels. But Lynch had accustomed us so much to playing with paradoxes. Because the filmmaker of “Mulholland Drive” had evacuated his Laurel Canyon residence six days before he was struck down by chronic emphysema which was devouring his lungs. If we were to compare the brilliant director of “Blue Velvet” to a rock group, it would undoubtedly be legendary like the Velvet Underground, which shows what an immense void he leaves behind him.

I never had the privilege of handing my microphone to David Lynch, however if by chance I had to prove by A + B = C his crucial importance in my personal Pantheon, I just need to remember that in the last century, when he captivated us with his mind-blowing series TWIN PEAKS at a time when replay, streaming, VOD and the internet were non-existent and we still had to devour each episode live on the old-fashioned way. Therefore once a week, if that day I attended a concert, I left the room well before the encore to be back home and be able to immerse myself in the universe as esoteric as it is futuristic and ethereal of the Agent FBI special Dale Cooper, his poisonous beauties, his “cherry pie” and his “excellent cup of coffee”. Undoubtedly the most addictive television drug since “The Prisoner”. And for a rock critic to shorten a rock concert like this, there must be a damn good reason. David Lynch was much more than a gifted filmmaker, a conjurer of images, a sort of Wizard of Oz in Cinemascope. His vision of beauty, of love, of intrigue, of seduction was simply unique. And therefore unforgettable. This means that his death at only 78 years old leaves an immense abyss.

David LynchDavid Lynch’s death was announced Thursday by his family on his official Facebook page. “There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us,” the message read. “But, as he said so well, keep your eyes on the donut and not the hole… It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.” Lynch revealed last August that he was battling emphysema, a chronic lung disease, caused by “many years of smoking.”

At the turn of the 80s, while interviewing Jackson Browne and David Lindley (See on Gonzomusic JACKSON BROWNE & DAVID LINDLEY: Return to Diablo Canyon… and also FAREWELL DAVID LINDLEY) I made friends with a young label manager at Elektra records . A few years later, in the 90’s feeling the tide of the industry turning, my girlfriend left the record industry to start working in the cinema. Pure Californian Cori Glazer surfs and pilots small planes above LA, full of energy she becomes a scriptwriter on film sets and in 1988 collaborates for the first time with David Lynch on the filming of his short film “The Cow -Boy ad the Frenchman”, an uninterrupted collaboration which will continue until the 3rd season of TWIN PEAKS. (See on Gonzomusic https://gonzomusic.fr/?s=twin+peaks) Here is what Cori published on his Facebook page:

“In 1988, I was asked to work on a short film directed by David Lynch called “The Cowboy and the Frenchman”. I had only been a script supervisor for three years, but during those three days of filming, I told myself that if I had to work with only one director for the rest of my life, it would be with him. And that’s how it happened… There are truly no words to describe the legend of this man. He has inspired countless people around the world to not be afraid of their creativity and to be consistent with themselves. My heart is devastated right now, so many memories, so much pleasure, so much love… To quote the announcement made by his family today…

“There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us. But as he said: “Keep your eyes on the donut and not the hole.” »

So long David Lynch…
