Major brands have access to “wines that are not easily found”
“Franck Thomas, best sommelier in Europe, accidentally found himself at Carrefour Toison d’Or. He discovered a particularly eclectic range of wines, a very wide range of prices and references from all regions,” he says. “As a local of the stage, I went there to validate the concept. »
This is how on January 9, in Paris, The French Wine Review awarded the “hypermarket of the year prize” to the Dijon store. “There is a desire to redevelop a wine offering with trained sellers,” underlines the Beaune journalist. Who also notes that “the big brands do what is necessary to have access to wines that are not easily found, at prices that remain reasonable”: we find good bottles at market prices, “even in the low range of the market”.
An aligoté burgundy at €5.70, a Pernand-vergelesses at €15.65…
For its part, Carrefour analyzes: “The commitment, passion and expertise of the department manager, Emmanuel Barillé, make it possible to offer an interesting selection of wines at attractive prices, working with numerous direct suppliers.” The Toison d’Or hypermarket was able to display a Saint-Véran old vines at €9.45, a Pernand-Vergelesses at €15.65 or a Burgundy Aligoté at €5.70.
Rich with more than 2,000 references
“This also allows us to be innovative with different little-known grape varieties and to introduce people to certain interesting wines,” adds the brand. Who puts forward another argument: “What sets us apart is the breadth of our offer – more than 2,000 references – which allows us to satisfy all types of customers. We have exceptional bottles like a Château La Mission Haut-Brion Lafite Rothschild, bottles of Côte Roast from Maison Guigal or even a Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes.”
-A “chai” with bottles priced at over €600
The hypermarket’s cellar was completely redesigned in 2019, at the time of the store’s redesign, with the creation of a “cellar” in which high-end wines and some Burgundian appellations are stored horizontally or in boxes. air-conditioned wardrobes. “Here, the price range extends from around fifteen euros to more than 600,” notes Laurent Gotti.
“Promote the Burgundian terroir”
“For certain periods of the year, we expand our offer with specific references such as during the holidays when we took the gamble of buying jeroboams (3 liter bottle in Burgundy, editor’s note) of Hautes Côtes de Beaune for €80 , For example. This selection was very successful,” explains Carrefour.
“The main objective of the director and the store is to promote the Burgundian terroir by highlighting local products, of which wine is obviously part of Burgundy. This is one of the reasons which explains the particular interest shown in this area. »
