He only took office last September. The current Minister of State of the Principality of Monaco, Didier Guillaume, has died at the age of 65, the Prince’s Palace announced in a press release this Friday, January 17. He would have died of a “severe illness that occurred during his hospitalization“.

Prince Albert II of Monaco held “to salute the remarkable commitment of His Excellency Mr Didier Guillaume, in the service of the Principality“. Despite a mandate of barely four months, the Palace emphasizes that it “will have demonstrated all its determination and know-how in order to make concrete progress on essential issues for the future of Monaco“.

The interim role of Didier Guillaume in Monaco, equivalent to the position of Prime Minister in France, was entrusted by the Prince to Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Government Advisor-Minister of External Relations and Cooperation.

Didier Guillaume spent most of his life in Drôme, having been mayor of his commune Bourg-de-Péage at the end of the 1990s, then president of the department’s general council for 11 years, until 2015.

At the same time, Didier Guillaume was senator for Drôme from 2008 to 2018, but also president of the socialist group in the Senate for four years.

In October 2018, he joined the government of Édouard Philippe during a reshuffle, and became Minister of Agriculture, a position he held for two years.

His appointment to Monaco last September comes four years after resigning from his post as senator in 2020. However, his name did not appear in the traditional list of “2 or 3 candidates who come from the prefectural body or the Quai d’Orsay“that the Élysée is proposing for this position.
