The deputy minister for Gaspésie-Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine supports former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, in the race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Diane Lebouthillier released a brief statement on social media Thursday afternoon.
“We are at a critical moment for the future of our country. Chrystia Freeland has always had Quebec and French at heart. Having worked with her for more than nine years, I can tell you that she is the best person to embody the change we need in the Liberal Party,” wrote the elected Liberal to show her support.
Freeland is expected to enter the leadership race on Sunday.
Former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Mark Carney, announced his candidacy Thursday afternoon in Edmonton.
Chrystia Freeland resigned with a bang on December 16, plunging the Liberals into a crisis which led to the announcement of Justin Trudeau’s departure on January 6, once a successor had been found.
-The race schedule is very tight.
The deadline to announce your candidacy is January 23 and the registration fee has been set at $350,000.
The leader will be chosen on March 9.
He will become the de facto Prime Minister of Canada.
