► Israeli security cabinet meets
The Israeli security cabinet is due to meet on Friday (January 17) after finalizing the final details of an agreement for a truce in Gaza and the release of hostages, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.
“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was informed by the negotiating team that agreements have been reached for the release of the hostages”his office said in a statement.
“The prime minister ordered the political and security cabinet to meet on Friday. The government will then meet to approve the agreement”declared Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
Benjamin Netanyahu is assured of obtaining a majority despite opposition from far-right ministers. One of them, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, said Thursday he would resign if the government adopts the truce agreement «irresponsible» with Hamas.
► Macron arrived in Lebanon
French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived in Beirut to support Lebanon’s new leaders and their efforts to form a government capable of opening a new chapter in the country’s history.
His 12-hour express visit coincides with that of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who arrived in Beirut on Thursday evening. It is possible that the two men will see each other there, while France is involved in monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
► The G7 calls for “full implementation” of the truce in Gaza
The leaders of the G7 countries on Thursday evening described the agreement for a truce in Gaza as“important news” and called on Hamas and Israel to work towards its “full implementation”.
“We urge all parties to constructively negotiate subsequent phases of the agreement, to ensure its full implementation and a definitive end to hostilities”they said in a statement.
