RECAP’ – The agreement centers around a six-week truce with the release of hostages, negotiations for a permanent ceasefire and the reconstruction of Gaza
After fifteen months of deadly conflict in the Gaza Strip, Israel and Hamas reached a historic ceasefire agreement following lengthy negotiations in Qatar. This ceasefire, announced by Joe Biden from the White House, is due to come into force on Sunday January 17 and could mark a major step forward towards the end of hostilities in the region.
How will the ceasefire take place?
This ceasefire agreement will take place in three phases. The first will begin with a temporary six-week truce. This period will see the release of 33 Israeli hostages held by Hamas. In exchange, Israel will release a significant number of Palestinian prisoners, although the exact number has not yet been communicated. The temporary ceasefire should also allow Israeli forces to gradually withdraw from certain areas of the Gaza Strip.
