In Russian, the expression “carrying out butchery assaults” has now become familiar to describe many of the ground operations carried out by infantrymen in Ukraine. The two belligerents also accuse each other of carrying out such suicide attacks when, as the Russian-language service of the Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty, “the command, with the aim of occupying even the smallest and strategically insignificant locality, does not skimp on human losses”.
This tactic, the radio continues, nevertheless remains a kind of “registered trademark” Russian troops, largely superior in men, and which probably finds its origins in the first months of the war, when the Wagner mercenary group massively used units made up of convicts to lead a number of battles, notably that of Bakhmut.
