Two people died on Wednesday January 15 in Aisne in road accidents linked to ice, firefighters and local authorities announced. A first fatal accident occurred around 7 a.m. in Bergues-sur-Sambre.
“A light vehicle deviated from its lane and collided head-on with a heavy goods vehicle,” detailed the gendarmerie. The 19-year-old driver of the car died. Shortly before 8 a.m., another accident between a car and a two-wheeler took place between Rozoy-sur-Serre and Brunehamel. The moped rider, aged 18, died after being “hit from behind”, again according to the gendarmerie.

“The investigation is still ongoing, but these accidents are certainly linked to ice. The climatic conditions, grip and visibility, are strongly to blame”, in particular due to “thick fog”, explained a responsible communication of the department’s gendarmerie.
Aisne was not the subject of any vigilance on Wednesday by Météo France, but “the state of passability of the roads throughout the department deteriorated at the end of the night with the appearance of patches of ice”, depending on the prefecture.
In total, 12 road accidents were recorded in Aisne in the morning, also causing seven minor injuries, despite salting operations from 6 a.m. Rescue resources were reinforced on Wednesday in the department, with 90 firefighters deployed, authorities said.
