Once out of this three-story building, the mother was taken care of by the firefighters, the commander of the Compiègne gendarmerie company Arthur Cholet told AFP.
The mother and child were alone in the apartment at the time of the disaster, which occurred after 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
An investigation, entrusted to the national gendarmerie, was “opened in search of the causes of the death” of the child, and “the first investigations are intended to determine the cause of the fire, the origin of which is unknown at this stage”according to the Compiègne prosecutor.
