Louis Dario Marcus Calou was found guilty of the murder of James David William, 35, committed on February 17, 2019 in Bramsthan. This 56-year-old security guard was sentenced on Tuesday January 14, 2025 to twenty-four years in prison before the Assize Court.
Louis Dario Marcus Calou, a resident of Bel-Air/Rivière-Sèche, was charged with “manslaughter” before the Assize Court. He was charged with the murder of James David William, 35, on February 17, 2019, in Bramsthan. He pleaded guilty and was defended by Mr. Neelkanth Dulloo.
On the fateful day, the accused had returned home after his night shift. He didn’t see anyone at home and went to take his usual nap. He had woken up around noon. He then contacted his wife to find out where she was. The latter replied that she was at James David William’s with their two daughters and that she would not come home.
The accused knew that his wife was having an extramarital affair with James David William. He asked his wife to send the children home.
When the children did not return, he went to the home of James David William to pick them up. On the way, he had seen the latter, who was consuming alcoholic drinks near a store. He approached him to ask about his children. He said he didn’t know where they were. Which gave rise to an argument. James David William took a knife from his pocket. The accused grabbed the gun and struck James David William twice.
After the attack, the security guard returned home and consumed alcoholic beverages. He then cleaned the knife and went to the police.
According to the forensic report produced in court, the death of James David William was caused by a “stabbed wound of the heart”.
Under oath in court, the accused expressed remorse and apologized to the Court, the family of the deceased and the authorities. The accused had also requested leniency from the court due to his precarious health.
In his judgment, Judge Luchmyparsad Aujayeb took into account the seriousness of the attack and the behavior of the accused after it. “The accused went home and washed the knife in an attempt to remove traces of blood. He then went to the police and confessed to his crime,” underlines the judge. He sentenced the accused to twenty-four years in prison.
